I see this, and I now believe everyones` comparisons, judgements, and
differences, in view of what David has offered me (us) - namely what his own
abilities are, has steered this discussion a little nearer to futility. We
are all different; we all have different abilities; we all have different
beliefs. It`s interesting to listen to other points of view, but that is
all. The fact that politics has sought to influence social and national
behaviours by dictat towards the Arts is really identical to what we (you
yourselves) are now indulging in, namely "to and froing", and
"one-up-man-ship". My aim in this topic has been to extract the very
response I expected and got. So however much our own past education and
studies can help us to exchange ideas intelligently, we will never come to
whole accord, due to our own present agendi in politically influencing
ideas. It is futile to look at music under the "umbrella" of political
dictac. Any individual government will always be wasting it`s time. One
could say that the St Matthew Passion has a political bias or slant/leaning
towards a meaningful religious belief, (it`s never been banned anywhere
either) and in the same breath one could say that a Neanderthal grunt did
not have any meaning what-so-ever. But not so - they both have equal worth
to the "composer" and to the listener. All music is like this. Of course
some don`t like what they hear, but for us to try to expand on this dislike
in some extra-terrestrial intelligent dimension/direction, brings us to the
point of war, as does real politics. We must aim only to simply enjoy our
Arts. This is what art is for. (The moment it tries to exude political
influence is the moment it dies). To dislike any of the arts will be to
hopefully and eventually realise that it requires and takes effort,
hopefully worthwhile, in trying to understand what our artistes - our
*ordinary folk* (we are all artistes to some degree) are up to.
