There was a good moment once in a Bruggen rehearsal. He stopped, and
said to the first flute, in his slow way, "Lisa,......dark....plus
vibrato......equals.....bright."

There was a short pause; then she nodded, and we played the passage
again. It worked much better, everyone agreed.

Lisa's thought process was: he's asking me about the function of what
I'm playing here. I'm using vibrato, which makes what I do brighter.
How does that fit with everything else? Would it be better darker?
