I don't think music should be judged by laypeople. I started on Closé system
and being surrounded by Oehler adepts I just had the choice and I found the
German instruments (by the supreme makers) simply better, more elegant and
subtle and certainly more apt to the kind of "grave" sound required for the
German 19th c. repertoire. I even play Jazz (not exactly German music...) on
my German horns, though not with a German mouthpiece (but an American, Ch.
Bay). I don't give a ++++ what non musicians think a clarinet should sound
like. They might pick a Casio keyboard.

ps. don't get me wrong, I am NOT a partisan of all the lousy players in
