:) Walter, I'm glad Erik brought this up! I STILL play on YOUR
mouthpiece, and I still love it.
For students, so far I recommend either the Fobes Debut or the
comparable Hite beginner mouthpiece. (Clark, your Debut is a FABULOUS
piece of craftmanship - and SOOO reasonably priced!) I do not have
experience with the Hite, so I cannot say much about it other than it is
a product I consider due to having used other Hite mouthpieces in the
past and found them satisfactory.
The Debut, OTOH, I've had the pleasure of discovering a hidden GORGEOUS
sound within students who were making an uphill climb on either stock
mouthpieces or other mouthpieces that, though decent enough, were not
really suited to beginner/intermediate players. IMO, a student can use
the Debut all through high school. Certainly, if a student is advanced
enough, his/her private teacher would have some input, etc., and we
would look at a more individualized choice. However, when I say what I
do here, it is for the great majority of high school players who, more
than likely, will not play past a particular level, and probably will
not continue to play once they have graduated.
