I have never heard the NY Philharmonic live and you normally don't hear the
clarinet section clearly enough on recordings to be able to tell about
anything beyond solos. Does Drucker use vibrato when playing with the second
player? It seems to me that for most (for lack of a better term) "classical"
clarinetists who use it, vibrato is an expressive addition to solo playing.
It is turned on and off as the context changes, unlike strings and some
oboists, who use it most of the time. In fact non vibrato is generally
considered a special string effect in the modern orchestra, at least in
orchestral sections, that must be explicitly asked for either by the
composer or the conductor. Does Drucker use it beyond the obvious solo
passages?
