Technically, this is called "terminal vibrato" and Benny Goodman used it
extensively.

Here, of course, the clarinet is functionally a fifth sax, playing the
doubled lead with the 1st tenor. He must match vibrato with them, or
vice-versa really, but must do it in a manner compatible with the
saxes. Willie Schwartz's clarinet was CRITICAL to the sound of the Miller
reed section.

I have one Kell recording, of the Weber Concertino, and I agree the vibrato
is quite tasteful. Of course, I use vibrato a lot myself, but pretty much
only in solo work, not in section (except the big band stuff,
naturally). I find the sound is just too dead without it.
