Jason: As for Vibrato we have now gone into the dark zone and of course I
will say that vibrato is a very personal issue and leads itself to a great
amount of acrimony-especially among clarinetists!!! I believe like any
technique it can be used to good effect or vulgarity. I would not hesitate
to reccommend the recording of my old teacher Harold Wright who used it
sparingly and tastefully....for some reason I never got into the Brymer
style vibrato in spite of his immense musicality.

The important thing with vibrato is also to be able to use it when required
or turn it off like a switch. Wright could do that sort of thing as
well...in spite of the fact most clarinetists think he used it constantly.
Mr. Drucker of the NY PHil is also a great player and can and does employ
vibrato. The Marcellus school is defitely against vibrato....which goes to
show to each his own.
