I appreciate the comments about doubling. I'm quite interested in hearing
how professionals manage the various parts. And I appreciated Laroy Borchert's
list of reasons for doubling.
In my high school (in 1965), I remember no doubling. We were a serious,
good, small band, and I was under the impressions that changing instruments
somehow ruined your embouchure. Oh well. I guess that now students are much more
likely to experiment, and simply have fun on different instruments. As an
adult amatuer, only lack of cash prevents me from buying one each of every single
reed woodwind out there, including a taragoto. Seriously, I enjoy the
different insturments a lot, and can easily see the value of having a bass and an Eb,
and offering to play them in the bands I'm likely to get in.
