Subj: [kl] offset tone holes/keys
Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2003 15:16:11 -0400

The danger in posing a question like this is that I might get an answer, but
what difference does it make acoustically where a tone hole is placed on the
circumference of a horn body, as long as it's the right size, shape, and
distance down the pipe?

Yamaha's 221 student bass clarinet has a slightly offset LH low register C
key - same principle as the flute or sax G key (4th finger). Makes a big
difference when trying to manipulate the lower register touchpieces, esp. LH
F/C key. Wish I could have bought it - alas, I'm currently learning the
ropes on a Bundy BC. Plays okay for a student horn, but that offset makes a
difference.
