No, not a pad noise. We really should all fly to NY, sit at Morales' feet,
and beg him to elucidate (wouldn't he be surprised?). I'm certainly not the
expert and I wasn't even taking good notes. Of course the bubble wrap
analogy may have been a slight exageration, the sound in question is just
the slight ping? pop? at the beginning of a note that is normal, depends on
setup, and is not necessarily objectionable. I think Arthur Benade said
that it was really acoustically a good sign, that it meant that resonances
were lining up properly, etc., but then I can't be expected to quote Benade
accurately after 30+ years if I can't remember what Morales said after 5
days.

Anyway I think that what Morales was saying is that if you want a perfectly
smooth legato, with each note perfectly even from start to end and connected
smoothly to the next, that a finger speed somewhere between one so slow that
you get a gliss between notes and one that causes the pop is what you want.
