Subj: [kl] Reed Soaking Question
Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 18:05:16 -0400

It's now official folks. You must soak your reeds for 2-3 minutes. =
That
was the "correct" answer to the question on my daughter's band test. I
asked the test writer to explain his reasoning for asking this question =
and
he said, as someone else here had already surmised, that he was just =
making
certain they knew the reed needed to be moistened well before playing. =
He
said some kids try to get by without wetting the reed or they put it in
their mouth for a second and then slap it on the mouthpiece. We all =
know
they do this but I think he could have asked this question in a much =
clearer
way. The funniest part is that when I asked my friend about it, he said =
the
"correct" answer should have been 5-6 minutes and I had to tell him that =
was
not even an option in the multiple choice test he gave the kids. I let =
him
know his question spurred a lively discussion amongst the clarinet =
players
anyway.
