What is extraneous -- as in the example of "Keys & their character" -- is 10
messages, one following the other, each containing all of the ones before.
So the first message has 1. The second message has it's own message and the
one back message. The third message has it's own message and two back
messages, etc, and every message contains the administrivia at the bottom.
And it may be more irritating for those of us who get the digest. You can't
just delete; you have to step through all of the repetition.

It's also unnecessary because 95 percent of what is being said was said six
months ago on the same subject ... and 12 months ago and 18 months ago, etc.
The remaining five percent is probably contributed by some poor sucker who
didn't know what hot spots to avoid.
