Subj: [kl] The Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium last weekend, June 5-8
Date: Wed, 11 Jun 2003 11:09:31 -0400

I pretty much concur with what Annie said about the Symposium, though since
I arrived Friday noon I missed some good stuff that she mentioned and since
this was my first clarinet meeting I can't make comparisons.

It's interesting how fast my standards were raised, being around so many of
the best clarinetists. A recital from someone that's only 50 times as good
as I'll ever be seemed hardly worth listening to after hearing from
clarinetists 100 times better.

And I certainly learned a lot. In a master class, Ricardo Morales was
trying to get a student to move his fingers gently in order to avoid the pop
when starting a new note when playing legato. This made me more aware of
the phenomenon both in my playing and in others. In a later recital from
someone who was not so careful of this it sounded like he was strolling over
a field of bubble-wrap as he played.

I was probably most amazed by Ron Odrich who demonstrated the ability to
play just about anything spontaneously in both his recital and class.

The choir was certainly fun. We had about 35 minutes of music -- which we
played in 30 minutes -- to an audience of --- well anyone at a clarinet
meeting that's interested in clarinet choirs is going to be -- playing in
the choir, right?
