I have a lot of sympathy with this position

What's extraneous? Some readers may not read every message in a thread.
To
gather all of the relevant material, they would have to group the
subject
matter and read all of the e-mails at once. I for one like to pick up
the
latest message and see ALL of the previous messages attached thereto.
For those who don't want to re-read parts of a thread, they can just
stop
reading. There is no law that says one has to read everything in an
e-mail.
New material is at the top of the message.
If the issue is one of size, these messages rarely exceeds 2K, perhaps
10K
tops.
