I'm not distressed at all, Dan. I just got back from a long day of
teaching clarinet.
I would like to tell all of you about a similar discussion. For
years and years, certain "spiritualistic-hippee-types" of people would
want to do astrological charts on folks to find out about their
personality, based on their birthday and rising sign. I would tell them
that I personally did not care about any of that, because I had heard on
the DISCOVERY channel that there were the same number of serial killers
in all 12 astrological signs. So it really didn't matter to me what sign
anybody was born under.
I also don't care what key anybody plays in, or if they think one
key is more "magical" than another. If they like a certain key and think
that it has special qualities, it is certainly o.k. with me. Maybe it
does have a special quality. When my voice got lower as I got older, I
had to transpose tunes into more comfortable keys many times. I don't
care what key anybody plays in or whether or not they think that the key
has special qualities. I would never think of getting into an argument
over "keys" with anybody. I might encourage somebody to play or sing in
a more comfortable key for them.
I frankly think that it is a waste of time to argue about such
things. Everybody is entitled to think anything they want about
astrological signs, clarinet tone adverbs, or keys. I have many friends
who have all sorts of "different" religious beliefs, political
orientations, philosophical opinions, theories of health and nutrition.
It never ends. I usually don't have time to listen to their debates,
because it takes all of my strength to get my clarinet students to sound
good and to show up to my few measly gigs. ANNIE
