Walter,

I've read it was none other than Theobald Boehm himself. He spring tempered
(quenching at the blue oxide color) English sewing needles. Apparently, in
the middle 19th century, they were a high carbon cast steel ideal for spring
tempering! I've never attempted to spring temper modern needles. They're
nickel plated these days. That might confuse the process a bit.
