For what it's worth, I just pulled out an LP re-pressing of the (a?) Shaw
recording and it is, shure 'nough, in concert D. Funny thing is, having
listened as a teenager to another (an RCA 45 RPM EP re-pressing) recording
of it over and over (and playing along by ear), I always thought it was a
half-step lower (concert Db). Obviously, my turntable's speed at the time
was inaccurate. The one I now have has a built in strobe to allow speed
checking (and an adjusting knob to go along with it), so I'm fairly sure
tonight's experiment got an accurate result.

Does anyone out there know how many times Shaw recorded Begin the Beguine
for commercial release? Are we all listening to the same single recording,
or are there several out there? I know, by contrast, that I've heard at
least three different recordings of Goodman and his orchestra playing Sing,
Sing, Sing (including the Carnegie Hall Concert recording).
