The original key of the Artie Shaw record of Begin the Beguine is D concert,
placing the clarinet in the key of E! Nice brilliant key! Some of the
charts are written in C concert, however.
I am a clarinet/tenor player in the Boston/Providence/Newport area. I have
played with Dick Johnson---my good friend for many years----who leads the
present edition of the Artie Shaw Orchestra. As I am his trusted friend, I
do his work when he is on the road, leading the Shaw band. I did manage to
take one road trip, however-----and the chart is in D concert!!!!
Whatever happened to "come home from school and play along with the record?"
The CD is available, and the FF/REW on the CD player makes playing along
easier than having to "drop the needle" as we did in the 50s. Are you guys
THAT dependent on written music??? Come, come, now-----whatever happened to
ears?
