There is not so much a change in tone and response, but further and
UNdesired effects on intonation occur, especially in the throat
region. Tuning rings, by filling in the relatively large discontinuity in
the bore (from inner diameter of the bore to OUTER diameter of the tenon
and back), eliminate that problem. The good news is that tuning rings are
really a CHEAP fix. If you are at all handy, you can make them yourself
out of hose washers or some other materials.
