I ought to further explain that the kids do not receive a grade for band =
at
the elementary level in our district. The test, as I mentioned, has =
several
hundred questions, dealing with everything from clarinet fingerings, to
rhythms, dynamics, phrasing, etc... The test was a multiple choice one =
and
I'll have to admit some of his "potential" answers were very humorous. =
This
same man is the Sousa fan I mentioned and he has taught quite a lot of
theory and history to the kids. (probably far too much than they could
handle) It's just that they don't remember it and I suppose he wanted =
to
determine exactly how much they did remember. However, I thought the =
test
was much too long and a bit too advanced for sixth graders but they have
been taking lessons for 2 years now and I do believe he really did cover =
all
those concepts during those two years. The reed soaking question, =
however,
was the only one I simply couldn't determine a "right" answer for and I =
was
just curious if I was the only clarinet player who had never heard of an
ideal amount of time to soak a reed.
