I agree, it is a dumb question.
My Master dissertation is about reeds and I made a lot of expiriences in
soaking reeds in water and saliva: the time you spent with the reed in water
or saliva is a mater of taste. After the breaking period, the reed can
support any amount of mosture.

OK folks. My daughter's elementary band director (and personal friend who
plays bassoon in our woodwind quintet) gave the sixth graders a horrendously
lengthy test for them to complete before the end of the school year. It is
a take-home test and consists of several hundred questions. One of the
questions is:

Of the five different times listed below, which one would be the best for
correctly soaking the clarinet reed in water before playing?

a. 30 seconds
b. 2-3 minutes
c. 45 seconds
d. 15 seconds
e. 1 minute

I'll have to admit this one has me stumped. I just put my reeds in water
and let them soak there while I'm practicing. Is there any truly correct
answer to this question? My daughter says she can't recall him ever talking
about this. I'm sure he did but she does not remember.
