He may be a friend of yours, but I've never figured out what's supposed to
be cute or funny about sending children off with a raft of unanswerable
questions and the impression that this is going to count as part of their
grade. This is a classic for band directors to do, as school administrators
often require a written test. Please tell me he gave them a sufficiently
broad wink and nod that they know this isn't going to count (unless he means
to fail them all).

There is plenty of legitimate stuff for a written test of first-year
musicians. Y'know - time signatures, key signatures, rhythm counting
questions, even some basic music history if he were on the job and had
taught some. Oh, right, that would require work, and printing out some
musical notation.

And as others have said, I don't soak my reeds in anything, other than my
mouth, for exactly the period of time it takes for me to assemble my
clarinet(s). And since it takes twice as long on occasions when I also need
my "A" clarinet, it must not be that critical (unless the soggier reed is
what contributes to the more "pastoral" sound of my A).
