the best place for questions about sousa and especially his music is the
"president's own", marine band library in washington dc. much of the
original newspaper clippings and music is kept there. nobody takes
preserving sousa history like the marine band! he was our director from
1880-1892. his father was a marine band trombonist and as little boy, john
phillip only lived about 2 blocks from where daddy went to work. he grew up
running around marine band rehearsals! how fun is that!?

the library staff could probably tell you without much trouble the
compositions of sousa that used an Ab clarinet. off the top of my head, i
can't think of any.

the library phone number is 202-433-4298. the head librarian is mgysgt mike
ressler, but all of the library staff could help.

have fun,
jay niepoetter
