The article mentions Hespos's "Gelb," a piece to tax any clarinet
choir (scored for Ab, Eb, C, Bb, A, basset horn, tarogato, tenor sax,
bass clarinet, contrabass (just Bb or Bb + Eb? I can't remember off
the top of my head)). Hans Werner Henze uses it in a couple symphonic
pieces and in a quartet (w/ sopranino saurussiphone, baritone oboe
and soprano sax or something like that).
[ The composer Terje Lerstad mentioned in the woodwind.org archived post
is also the only person I know to have composed for the sub contra
clarinets. ]
Cailliet's arrangements for clarinet choir use the high instrument well.
As far as solo works go, not much. But if you buy one and hang around
with composers you'll get a few pieces written for it soon enough.
But yeah suprised that there aren't more solo works for it,
considering it's such a pain to play it in tune with others. :)
Scelsi's _Tre studi_ for solo e-flat plays very well on the
instrument, since it stays within the practical upper range of the
a-flat.
My instrument was made by L.A. Ripamonti (near Milan); very smooth
sound, free blowing up high E or F; can't compare intonation vs. other
A-flats since I haven't played on any others since I've spent time
with this one. But the price was right (~$1600 two years ago when the
Euro was near a record low against the dollar).
Best,
Myke
