Walter makes some good points, especially about the barrel being the weak
link. It gets more moisture partly because the end grain is exposed in both
tenon sockets and since the barrel is short, expansion & contraction from
the ends is more likely to deform.

Now: my question about immersion: One way that wood carvers stabilize wood
is to soak the wood not in oil, but in poly ethelene glycol. Does anyone
know if this has been tried for clarinets? or if there are reasons not to?
