The card stock is a good idea. I don't always have it available. When I
blow up a piece, I put it in one of the extra heavy plastic sheet
protectors, usually one on each side. It stands up quite nicely and the
plastic is slit about 2/3 the way down the side, so it's easy to get in and
make marks on the music. I have a very promising 8th -- now 9th grade
clarinet student who goes to play in the community band with me -- the same
one I used to conduct. He can't read the little parts, either. We used to
turn the large pages into the library, but the librarian said she didn't
have any way to store them. So we just trash them at the end of the
concert.

One other reason I copy is because of poor (to impossible) page turns.
We're playing "Tin Pan Alley" for the Jazz Into June Concert. The first
page turn is like an 8th rest or so. Even allowing for the inside person to
turn the page, this is a problem. We only have two on each part for this
concert. I copied the first page and used the glue stick that has post-it
note-type glue and attached it to the second page. The second page turn is
a measure & a half, and we manage it. I don't mind buying extra copies of
music, for what we need. I don't copy, just for the sake of copying, but
I'm not going to reward companies for crappy printing.

I don't like copying the 9x12 pages, since you're effectively reducing the
music. The older I get, the larger I need the music needs to be. The last
thing I conducted was the Holst Midwinter last Christmas. I bought three
scores, took one to Kinkos and enlarged it so each page was 11x17 to use for
rehearsals. Since I paid for two I didn't really need, I don't figure I
cheated anyone.

I saw a piano duo (and that's essentially all I remember) that had copied
their music so that there were four pages per page. Large, but didn't
require many page turns. <g>

The HS marching band's shows are printed from Finale on full-size pages.
This isn't a problem, since they have to memorize it before band camp,
anyway.
