Someone wrote to inquire as to whether Sousa's marches were written for =
marching band or concert band.=A0 He not only wrote his marches for =
concert band, but he, or his publishers,=A0also issued orchestra =
versions of many of them.=A0 Naturally, the most well-known of these is =
the orchestral version of the "Stars and Stripes Forever."=A0 The music =
is transposed to a key that is more compatible to the string players.=A0 =
(Eb and Ab, as opposed to D and G for the band version.)

Another poster said that the Sousa band marched only four times during =
its very long history.=A0 I recall reading that it was his practice, =
when the band arrived in a town where they were going to play a concert, =
to form the band in a marching formation at the railroad station, and to =
have them march and play on the way to the place where the concert would =
be held, as a way of advertising their upcoming performance.=A0 Can =
anyone confirm or contradict this?
