About 15 years ago, when I was conducting the Bettendorf (IA) Park Band,
we did a couple of performances of "Stars & Stripes" in which all three
tubas played the piccolo obbligato, as a section. The section included
a former college tuba instructor, a recent high school graduate who
shortly after that was accepted into a US Army band, and last but
certainly not least, professional tubist Dave Gannett, who was visiting
his parents in the area and sat in with the band for a while.

Our piccolo players (we usually used 3 or 4 for this tune) said that
doing this once or twice was all right with them, as long as we didn't
make a habit of it!

And yes, the audience loved it.
