Subj: RE: [kl] something a little different for marching band...

I'm sorry that my original post on this subject has taken off in so many
different -- and in some cases, nasty -- directions. My point was -- and
still is -- that Rebecca will not be able to MAKE her band director -- or
band dictator, as she calls him -- do anything. If the band director is
doing his/her job, s/he is working with what is available to produce a good
sound and teach music and produce a good sound, and let's face it, produce
an organization that will direct the interests of the parents and the school
board to the band, in a positive way.

I think that Rebecca should buy an Eb, if she wants to have an Eb. I would
personally suggest she get the best one she can afford, because they are
difficult enough to control, in the best of circumstances. Then, when she
has learned to play, she should offer to either play it in concert band or
if it is a small band, offer to double. I doubled on Eb and bass, both,
over the years, both in high school and one year at university with success.
It helps to make you valuable. You cannot, however, dictate to the director
what you're going to do. As I've noted before, bands -- and most musical
organizations -- are benevelant dictatorships.

Perhaps we can put this to rest.

Jim Hobby
