There is a lot of debate about his playing because:

-- he's popular. We clarinetists hate that.
-- he *doesn't* play like a robot. Given that some of us are still wondering
if vibrato is okay, it's no wonder that many feel he is committing one
heresy after another. His style might not be suited to being a section
player in an orchestra, but that's not his job.
