I think it's time to consider the differences in marching on a football
field at halftime and marching a parade. There is definitely nothing wrong
with marching an eefer for a parade. You're certainly going to have a
piccolo or two, why not an eefer? Here in New Orleans, where I live now,
whenever the woodwinds walk by it sounds like ass anyway and people cover
their ears, so why not include an eefer or two? For the record, in
Michigan, our marching bands were our pride and joy and you looked forward
to the clarinet section passing by when I was section leader. And for Kent
Krive (my mentor) who knew I was second chair my whole life-remember that
jamie was drum major senior year making me section leader. :) and to toot
my own horn (tee hee) we won first place at state marching band competition
that year!! But we still wouldn't dream of putting an eefer on the football
field.

I wish I that I had thought of that Josh - a really good point. Unless
someone wants to explain why Sousa was a poor composer who didn't know
what he was up to?

For the record I think Sousa was a brilliant composer of marches -
second to none in the field - and I love playing them. Difficult to do
really really well, but easy to play!
