What about playing male voice songs on the alto or basset horn?
Erlkoenig could be spectacular!
I used to play through Winterreise when I was young and I always thought
it worked well in most cases.

This is a little different from opera arias, but Carl Baermann
transcribed 15 Schubert songs for clarinet and piano. Pamela Weston made
an edition of 6 of them for Universal (IIRC), and some of them are very
nice. I played three on my recital this past January.
Since some of them were for male voice, after listening to the original
and my recording from rehearsals, I was bothered by the change in range
from male voice to clarinet. I made a list of about 6 songs for female
voice that I want to transcribe for clarinet and piano. Really soon!!
Stoltzman and Richard Goode jointly transcribed about 10 Ives songs for
clarinet and piano. I heard the two of them play these songs at a
recital
here in Virginia, and they were stunning. Never published or recorded as
far as I know.
