I have to jump in on this discussion on "pushy" instruments. (Mostly because
I haven't been able to post to the list in several years, and I'm making up
for lost time!)

We are not talking "symphony orchestra" or "string quartet" here: we are
talking about school bands! If we were talking about professional groups,
the percussionists' union would be up in arms about non-percussionists
tapping their feet, much less playing a drum!
When I wa in college, I played oboe parts on an eefer and french horn parts
on an alto. Why? Becuase we didn't have any of those instruments and I
suggested it! The director would never have thought of those solutions on
his own - and they worked (not as well as having the actual instruments, but
they filled out the part!)! Yes, he could have said no, and I would have
accepted that. But I don't understand why anyone would just flatly say that
no one has the right to make the suggestion in the first place!
My high school marching band had a full wind section (yes, we even had
FLUTES!) and we could all be heard. It's up to the director to select music
appropriate for the group and adjust the balance, either through volume or
quantity!

-Scott Morrow (who single-reedily outplayed four trumpets, two trombones,
two saxes, and a baritone in pep band!)
