In elementary school, I am for letting the child pick his instrument. =
When a kid moves on to secondary school band, the other instruments need =
to be made available in the primary band. Those kids who choose to move =
to bass clarinet or baritone, etc. can do so and the band will have =
proper instrumentation. The other kids who want to stay on their =
instruments of choice, that can't be accommodated in the primary band, =
can now play in one of the secondary bands. When and if they become =
good enough to audition their way into the primary band, then they can =
play in it on the audition instrument.
