It's either me being quoted here or someone who thinks just like me, so I'll
jump in, even though I shouldn't...

Yes, playing multiple instruments is a good thing (assuming you play them
well). And directors should encourage it, and allow for creativity, yadda,
yadda, yadda. I'm meeting a new student tomorrow who's taking up saxophone
to add to her flute playing (which is all-state level), and I'm delighted by
the prospect. Hats off to her director, who is encouraging her to join the
jazz ensemble. Plus I think all woodwind players should have to struggle
with reeds at some time in their lives - it builds character.

However, one of the things (perhaps one of the few worthwhile things) one
should learn from marching band is teamwork and a reasonable respect for the
authority of the director. I was hired recently to play a gig on bari sax.
If I had brought my tenor and insisted on playing it, I think most of us
would understand that my services would not be required...

I don't believe anyone has said anything against the idea of buying an Eb if
she has the money, or trying it out -- I was just trying to caution her
against the disappointment of finding out, perhaps after making a
substantial investment, that she still wouldn't be allowed to put it to use.
