I don't see how woodwind players are "required" to play other instruments or
take on other parts, unless you are referring to Drum Corps International.
In that case, a woodwind player would need to learn a different instrument
or do colorguard. In marching bands, all woodwind players have a part, it's
just that they are not heard very well. Brass can project straight to the
audience, and saxophones as well. With woodwinds, it's a problem of
projection. Clarinets play directly to the ground, and that's why they can
not be heard. However, woodwind parts still exist.
Does that clarify at all?
