Matthew, a limey,
I was in marching band 35 years ago, so I don't speak from recent experience.
But I observe that marching bands here are a cultural phenomenon. Some think
they are great, some think they are silly and not music. I think anything is
good when people, particularly kids, get together to make something
spectacular happen. Some high school marching bands are giant, with independent
budgets, tractor trailers of their own, immense parent support organizations, and
directors of almost star status. A kid that wants to be part of that may not
care whether he or she is dancing or playing bass sarrusaphone. (That last is
slightly dry humor.) Come to think of it, I played Glockenspiel in Navy boot
camp drum and bugle corps.
