In grad school I had a friend who studied with Harold Gomberg, principal
oboe of the NY Phil at the time. Gomberg apparently boiled his cane to
kill any bugs or other organisms that might be found in the cane.

One day, during my friend's lesson, Gomberg's wife stuck her head in to
ask if Harold smelled something burning. Annoyed at having his lesson
disturbed, he said no - he had the windows open, and the smell must be
from traffic on the street. A few moments later, he rushed out to the
kitchen, where his pot of boiling cane had cooked dry, burning the cane,
and ruining an otherwise perfectly good pot!

So, Tony - have you ever stir-fried your reeds, and if so, what sort of
oil did you use!! ;-)

Cheers!

David
