Hmmm I don't think this is obvious, as the lacquer may be there for a
purpose. I asked Steve Fox about oiling my new basset horn, and he said
it wouldn't do anything (apart from a little cosmetic treatment now and
then on the outside), since the bore and tone holes were lacquered with
a thin coat of shellac. I am certainly not removing this! This is for
cocobolo, not grenadilla, and the former does not take such a high
polish as grenadilla without the lacquer. Now, the surface finish of the
wood definitely affects the tone through skin friction (see Benade), so
if you remove the lacquer you are likely to change the sound. Cocobolo
is also a little more affected by moisture changes in the air, so the
shellac also plays a role in sealing the wood and inhibiting these
changes.
