Subj: [kl] overreactions to reed rotating posts
Date: Tue, 20 May 2003 11:50:36 -0400

Hi all!

Several people have reacted rather strongly to my post about reed rotating.
Specifically, Matthew said:

<<<Hold on a tick. You make it sound as if anyone who doesn't follow your
example is doomed to failure. That no-one could be an even quarter
decent clarinettist unless your strictures were followed. [And, for
clarity, this isn't specifically said to Elise, it's just that I'm
responding to her post].>>>

Who is the "you" being referred to here, if not me? My name is the only one
mentioned.

And earlier, Nancy expanded on her already-stated opinions about rotation,
along with personal comments about other posters (me?) such as, "Not everyone
needs to go through this anally retentive routine of religious reed ritual",
"to say that one must rotate reeds or he/she will suffer from acute facial
muscle collapse if they don't, or that they better rotate their reeds or the
Clarinetist's Rotationary Army will get them, is balderdash", "Maybe I'm
crazy, but there is more to clarineting than sitting and sorting reeds and
worshipping reed cases and glass plates. Man, get a life!"

I have to say I have been very surprised that what I wrote would generate
these responses. I was prepared to ignore Nancy's personal comments, but when
Matthew also reacted, I decided I needed to clarify.

My post was for the purpose of providing reasons for rotating, since I don't
think the answer, as someone suggested, is obvious at all. The original
question from a student was when to change reeds. Several people offered
suggestions of what they thought was appropriate, several other people
attacked or ridiculed those people, and some people just made jokes that
generated other threads about flavored reeds and whiskey. I wrote to supply
to the student who asked reasons why it was a good idea to rotate. Nowhere
did I say what my own routine was....others did this. As to my routine, I
merely mentioned what kind of reed case I used, and that I changed reeds
during a concert once.

As an ENTJ (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator The Personality Page ), I CAN be
opinionated, and have been on this list on the past, but if you are reading
into my post what is stated above, then I would hate to see what you did if I
actually wrote the way you do!

And to the student who asked the original question, and all others out there,
I hope you can glean the wheat from the chaff in this discussion! :-)
