I know this is getting late in the thread, but it might help anyway...

I strongly recommend joining the Frequent Flyer program of whatever airline
you choose to fly with. Apart from generally earning enough points to take
another holiday with, you do get slight concessions when you are flying.

For example, I have flown >200 times in the last 2 years (yup, average 2
flights per week) and have only ONCE been forced to send carry-on to the
hold (trying to sneak 3 pieces onto an almost empty plane... I tried to
convince them one was for my travelling companion in the empty seat next to
me, but to no avail) and I have been able to stretch the rules in my favour
a number of times.

However, saying that, "they" do seem to be more strict on International
flights (which are generally full), and you do need to exercise common sense
(I wouldn't take any other bags - maybe a book or a magazine - gives them
less room to argue) and if you can follow someone with 2 bags on, well your
chances will be better ("HE's got 2 bags, I've only got one!" but I would
make sure you are not sitting close to "him" just in case they take one of
his away).

Dave.
