I have played clarinet for more than forty years, have never rotated
reeds, have never had tired muscle syndrome or any trouble being
prepared for a concert. I have even been so bold (here it comes, get
the fire extinguisher), as I did last night, as to pull 2 reeds out of a
box and slap them on my Eb and Bb clarinets, toot on them once or twice,
declare they were fine, and proceed to sit through the longest concert I
think I have ever played (2 3/4 hours), just to see if there really was
a reason to rotate reeds. All this after playing mostly on one stinking
Legere on each instrument for more months than I can remember. Not
everyone needs to go through this anally retentive routine of religious
reed ritual. It's fine to suggest a solution, but to say that one must
rotate reeds or he/she will suffer from acute facial muscle collapse if
they don't, or that they better rotate their reeds or the Clarinetist's
Rotationary Army will get them, is balderdash. I'm with Tony on this
one. The more ritualistic you get, the more likely that you will deal
with these unfortunate clarinet maladies. I have 21 students and none
of them has to go through all this. Some like the cheap Rico reeds and
some play other brands, but none have a reed religion that they
subscribe to. Maybe I'm crazy, but there is more to clarineting than
sitting and sorting reeds and worshipping reed cases and glass plates.
Man, get a life!

Nancy (I will be in my bomb shelter for a while.)
