I do not buy handselect. I buy a box, and hope they play. My strategy is to
play them all a little; then five minutes each a second time around; set
aside the five or six that aren't great and then play the rest randomly. If
one or two standout, I mark them with an "A." But honestly, each time I come
back to this small group, I find one unmarked that seems to do the job.

I keep all of my new or reeds that didn't survive the first cut, because I
have also found that three months later, some of these can play beautifully.
