I have played clarinet for more than forty years, have never rotated =
reeds, have never had tired muscle syndrome or any trouble being =
prepared for a concert. I have even been so bold (here it comes, get =
the fire extinguisher), as I did last night, as to pull 2 reeds out of a =
box and slap them on my Eb and Bb clarinets, toot on them once or twice, =
declare they were fine, and proceed to sit through the longest concert I =
think I have ever played (2 3/4 hours), just to see if there really was =
a reason to rotate reeds. All this after playing mostly on one stinking =
Legere on each instrument for more months than I can remember. Not =
everyone needs to go through this anally retentive routine of religious =
reed ritual. It's fine to suggest a solution, but to say that one must =
rotate reeds or he/she will suffer from acute facial muscle collapse if =
they don't, or that they better rotate their reeds or the Clarinetist's =
Rotationary Army will get them, is balderdash. I'm with Tony on this =
one. The more ritualistic you get, the more likely that you will deal =
with these unfortunate clarinet maladies. I have 21 students and none =
of them has to go through all this. Some like the cheap Rico reeds and =
some play other brands, but none have a reed religion that they =
subscribe to. Maybe I'm crazy, but there is more to clarineting than =
sitting and sorting reeds and worshipping reed cases and glass plates. =
Man, get a life!

Nancy (I will be in my bomb shelter for a while.)
