There is a story I read about one famous English clarinet player, Lazarus,
who had a table groaning under the weight of 50 mouthpieces all with reeds
on them.
Maybe his solution was every reed can find its mouthpiece, therefore had
enough mouthpieces and fitted a reed for the mouthpiece.
My friend at Boosey and Hawkes,Manton-Myatt said he knew a mouthpiece maker
in London that told him that Lazarus would order 12 mouthpieces to be sent
to his house post haste.
The other story is about Charles Draper, also a famous English player (pupil
of Lazarus) who used to admonish hi pupils for constantly changing the
position of the reed. His words were
Can you guarantee that you will put the reed back exactly where it was?
There are all kinds of solutions.
