Stuff like this reminds me why it took 9 years to regain my interest in
playing after I graduated.
Someone barking an imperative like this would prompt me to reply "For what?"
if I could get away with it. Is this guy a trumpet player? What is he
hearing that makes him think there's a defective reed lurking out there?
Ah - chipped reeds. Another thing I don't miss about school. Can count on my
fingers the number of reeds I've chipped as an adult. Maybe because I use
thicker reeds now, or maybe because I'm more careful, or maybe because I'm
not cooped up in close quarters with high-spirited teens. Yes, as you are
correctly doing, replace them when they're chipped.
Other than that, it's kind of subtle, but a reed should be replaced when it
doesn't feel and sound like a new one any more. Add a new one to your mix of
reeds that you rotate (you *do* rotate through at least 4 reeds, right?)
every few weeks so that you continue to know what a new one feels like. If
you're always more comfortable with your older ones than your newer ones, it
may be that you're trying to play a reed that is too strong for your present
mouthpiece and/or embouchure development.
