Hello everyone,

I'm just here briefly - so for those of you who may be shocked.........not
to worry!

A friend subscribed to Klarinet sent me a couple of postings regarding reed
cases. I thought I would post a link for those of you who are interested:

Also - regarding the information that Howard Klug provided via at least one
Klarinet poster - Howard is absolutely correct about the warping phenomena
surrounding "flat-bottomed" cases. While it doesn't matter if the flat
bottom is glass, metal, stone, or plexi-glass, it DOES matter that the reed
should not be dried flat side down on such a surface. Dr. Klug is right
that the warping can be exaggerated because of the way the reed dries -
thinnest edge to thickest middle. The flat bottom case is great for
storing reeds, protecting them, and for keeping them in some kind of
order. As far as maintaining humidity and life (beyond protection of the
reed), there are sure a lot of products out there - including a case made
by Robert DeLutis:

While quite expensive, the woodworking and quality of product is
superb. I've never used one as I have wondered about the rubber gasket
that closes off air circulation - thus, I've always wondered if reeds would
mold or grow bacteria. However - the idea of a dedicated slot for each
reed - with grooves cut that allows air to get to the middle of the reed
seems like it might be a good idea.

At any rate - I hope these two websites will provide at least a start for
those who are looking for reed cases.

Best wishes,
Roger Garrett
