Conventional wisdom is that you don't use one unless you have to. At a minimum,
they have 7 more pads to go bad. Possibly it it harder to slide notes. People
use them because they have very small hands, they have a specific problem that
makes it difficult to completely cover holes, and of course in large harmony
clarinets because the holes are bigger, etc.
