I had to check my blood quite often -- 3-4 times a day. It became a painful
chore to play clarinet or to type or to write on my shorthand machine. The
doctor suggested a device called Sof-Tact (Abbott Laboratories), that can be
used on the finger, on the arm, on the leg. It's true that the fingers are
the first indicators of blood sugar, but for regular tests, the arm works
quite well. (Tested out by the quarterly blood tests.) The gadget pulls a
small section of arm up via a vacuum and then a very sharp, very small
lancet pokes the hole, and the blood is drawn out and tested. It really
makes a big difference. One minor problem, for me. My insurance wouldn't
pay for anything but the basic model, but it was worth the money.
