Subj: [kl] Reed difficulties and mouthpiece sensibilities

Nancy,

I usually can find at least 50% out of ANY brand's reeds that
play, and darn near 80-90% of the reeds out of the V12s I use
will play right out of the box.

It's a mouthpiece thing, pure and simple. I traditionally play
on mouthpieces that are NOT particular with reeds. It's great to
get those mouthpieces that have a certain "ping" when the exact
match of a reed comes along, but on those particular
mouthpieces, it seems like all reeds NOT worthy of making that
"ping" sound just sound like crap, or don't play at all.

I have a Morgan mouthpiece that is one of those mouthpieces. I
spent HOURS just trying to find one or two reeds that wouldn't
squawk on that mouthpiece. When I did find one, it was heaven.
Those times were few and far between, so I gave up and went to
other mouthpieces, trying many reeds right out of the box when
testing the mouthpiece. If I had to spend ANY time on reeds
while trying out the mouthpiece, it went back in the box, and
back to the store immediately (i.e. time being I had tried 3 or
4 new reeds out of a box and none worked.)

I find that the Vandoren B45 and 5RV are VERY particular about
reeds, while I find that the M15, M30 and 5RV *Lyre* will take
most reeds I put on it and play like a champ.

Any mouthpiece makers out there want to comment about what makes
a mouthpiece choosy, and what makes a mouthpiece more acceptable
for use with different reeds? Clark? Walter? Gregory S.? I would
love to know, so I could be a little more proactive about
finding a mouthpiece, if I have to again. (I recently had to
QUICKLY find a new mouthpiece after my dog found my new one on
the coffee table and chewed the whole tip off.)
